Fan Friday: Mel Pempsell's 1989 Bright Red C4 Corvette

Not every great Corvette story starts with a long search. Mel Pempsell walked into Modern Chevrolet, spotted a red C4 coupe sitting in the showroom, and checked the odometer. It read 6,200 miles — original. The car had come straight out of the dealership owner's personal collection. Mel took it for a drive. That was that.

The car is a 1989 Corvette coupe in what appears to be Bright Red — the most classic and enduring of all C4 color choices — with black leather interior, both the removable targa roof panel and the glass roof in excellent condition, and a ZF 6-speed manual transmission. Mel has already put new tires on it, which is exactly the right call on a car with low miles and a history of light use. He's also apparently not afraid of the throttle — the car has been up to 125 mph, at which point Mel made the sensible decision to exercise some restraint. The L98 350 cubic inch V8 under the hood, producing 245 horsepower in 1989 spec, rewards exactly this kind of spirited driving.

The 1989 C4 sits in an interesting spot in the generation's history. It was the final year before a complete interior overhaul arrived for 1990, when Chevrolet replaced the much-criticized all-digital instrument cluster with a new analog/digital hybrid cockpit. It was also the final year of the L98 before the C4's power output began climbing toward the LT1 revolution of 1992. In short, the 1989 is the last of the original C4 interior era — a car that represents the generation before Chevrolet began significantly evolving it. Bright Red was consistently one of the most popular C4 color choices across the entire 1984–1996 run, and with good reason: on the C4's clean, low-slung body, it reads exactly the way a Corvette should.

The photo deserves special mention on its own. Mel photographed his Corvette in front of the last remaining shell-shaped Shell service station in the United States, located at Sprague and Peachtree Streets in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Built in 1930 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it's the sole survivor of eight shell-shaped stations originally built by the Quality Oil Company to promote the Shell brand through novelty architecture. It has been restored to its original yellow-orange finish and now operates as a museum landmark. Parking a bright red C4 in front of it is the kind of photo idea that only works if you actually think to do it. Mel thought to do it. 🏎️
