Mel Pempsell walked into Modern Chevrolet, spotted a red C4 in the showroom, checked the odometer — 6,200 original miles from the dealership owner's personal collection — and bought it. The 1989 Bright Red coupe is photographed in front of the last remaining shell-shaped Shell service station in the United States, a 1930 landmark in Winston-Salem, NC, on the National Register of Historic Places.
