Fan Friday: Kevin & Diane McBride's 2010 Cyber Gray ZR1
Some Corvette stories start with a careful, deliberate plan. Kevin McBride's started with a cheeseburger, a mustard stain, and a wife who refused to get out of the car.
Kevin had a rare Saturday afternoon off from work and stopped at a small local burger joint for lunch. The Chevy dealer down the road happened to have more Vettes on the lot than usual that day, and Kevin — mustard stain on his shirt and all — wandered into the showroom anyway. There were three ZR1s sitting on the floor. His wife Diane, who knew Kevin had been quietly admiring a Cyber Gray ZR1 online for some time, didn't hesitate. She climbed straight into the driver's seat of the Cyber Gray car. When Kevin noticed, he told her to get out. She had a different idea: "Get one like this, only automatic." Kevin had to break the news that Chevrolet never built the ZR1 with an automatic transmission — every single one came with a six-speed manual and a twin-disc clutch built specifically to handle the car's power. They bought the car the following Saturday.
What they bought is significant. The C6 ZR1 debuted in 2009 under the secretive development code name "Blue Devil," and at the time of its release, it was the most powerful production Corvette Chevrolet had ever built — a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8, hand-assembled at GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan, producing 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque. 2010 was the ZR1's single highest production year across its entire five-year run: 1,577 were built that year, out of 12,194 total Corvettes produced in 2010. Cyber Gray Metallic was the second most popular ZR1 color across the whole generation, but narrowed down to just 2010 specifically, only 289 were finished in this shade — putting Kevin and Diane's car into a fairly exclusive group. The chrome wheels seen in their photos are entirely factory-correct: chrome was one of three genuine finish options Chevrolet offered on the ZR1's wheels, alongside Competition Gray and Gloss Black, making this car a true no-mods example exactly as Kevin describes it.
That polycarbonate window in the hood — a first for any Chevrolet — gives a direct view down onto the supercharger and intercooler, with "LS9 SUPERCHARGED" embossed on either side. It's one of the most recognizable design details in modern Corvette history, and it's right there in Kevin's photos, gleaming under the lights of what looks like a proud display alongside vintage warbirds and a small fleet of fellow Corvettes. What a wife, indeed. Some people go looking for their dream car for years. Diane found Kevin's the moment she sat down in it. 🏎️
