The Heartbeat of America Is Back: Chevy's Iconic Campaign Returns for 2026

The Heartbeat of America Is Back
Chevy's most iconic advertising campaign returns after more than three decades — and a Corvette makes the cameo. Here's the story behind the slogan, what's new in 2026, and the officially licensed gear that's kept the name alive all along.
If you've caught Chevrolet's new commercial soundtracked by The Red Clay Strays, with a quick cameo from the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport, you're not imagining the déjà vu. "Heartbeat of America" is officially back on the air for the first time since the early '90s. Before you start searching for the merch, here's where the slogan came from, why Chevy brought it back now, and the "Heartbeat of America" gear you can already add to your garage or wardrobe today.
Where "Heartbeat of America" Came From
Oddly enough, the phrase found its audience through racing before Chevrolet ever put it in a commercial. Ad writer Jerry Burton came up with it in 1984 for a brochure marking 30 years of the small-block V8, using it alongside a companion line to describe how one engine tied generations of Chevys together. NASCAR team owner Richard Childress liked it enough to have it painted on Dale Earnhardt's transporter that same year, and a Chevrolet executive who spotted the truck at the 1985 Daytona 500 is credited with pushing it toward a national rollout.
By 1986, "Heartbeat of America" had grown from a brochure line into Chevrolet's full advertising campaign, originally sung by Aretha Franklin. It stayed in heavy rotation through 1993, and the tagline proved sticky enough that other artists re-recorded the jingle for Chevy in the years that followed — long after the ads themselves stopped airing.
What's New in the 2026 Revival
Chevrolet relaunched "Heartbeat of America" in June 2026 as the centerpiece of its America 250 initiative, timed to the nation's 250th anniversary. In place of Franklin, the reimagined version is performed by The Red Clay Strays, a country-rock band from Mobile, Alabama that released its own album, "Grateful," the same month the campaign debuted. Rather than record a standard jingle, Chevy's team traveled to Texas, Detroit, and Kansas to capture the actual heartbeat sounds of real Chevy owners and wove those recordings directly into the track.
Three people anchor the campaign in place of actors: a 91-year-old barbecue pitmaster in Lexington, Texas, who remembered the original ads from decades ago; a Detroit apparel-company founder who built his business to create local jobs; and a Kansas-based lawn-care creator known for free yard transformations for people in need. Ad agency Anomaly built the creative, with Dentsu handling placement across broadcast, digital, social, and radio. The debut commercial was filmed in Texas and Maine and features a cross-section of the current lineup — Bolt, Trax, Equinox, Traverse, Colorado, Silverado — plus that Corvette cameo. Early reactions online have been mixed, with some viewers missing the original's more melodic jingle, but the campaign has generated plenty of conversation either way.
It's the second piece of Chevy's America 250 push this year, following a modernized version of "See the USA in Your Chevrolet" recorded with country artist Brooke Lee, and it arrives alongside a revived "Baseball, Hotdogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet" social campaign.
A Stars & Steel Edition That Includes the Corvette
Alongside the ad campaign, Chevrolet rolled out a Stars & Steel special edition available on five U.S.-assembled nameplates: Corvette, Silverado EV, Silverado LD, Silverado HD, and Colorado. For every Stars & Steel vehicle sold, Chevrolet is donating $250 to nonprofits that support veterans and military families — making the Corvette one of only five models in the entire lineup carrying that distinction this year.
Why This Matters If You Drive a Corvette
The Corvette's cameo in the new commercial isn't a random cameo — the model was a fixture in Chevy's original 1980s and '90s "Heartbeat of America" ads, too. In the 2026 spot, a blue 2027 Corvette Grand Sport with a white racing stripe and red fender accents appears parked in front of a large American flag mural, a quick nod to that history. Long before the tagline had its own commercial, it was already stitched onto license plates, embroidered on hats, and painted on garage signs by owners who wanted to wear the connection between their car and the phrase. That gear never really went away, and with the campaign back in the national spotlight, now's a good time to know what's still available.
