Fan Friday: Walton “Wally” Mahlum’s 1969 Corvette Coupe
This week’s CorvetteStoreOnline.com Fan Friday highlights a Corvette that’s built for thrills and family memories, courtesy of Walton “Wally” Mahlum from Minnesota.
Some Corvettes come and go. Others become part of the family.
Wally’s 1969 Corvette coupe has been doing exactly that for nearly 56 years.
Purchased new on April 1st, 1970, this Stingray was actually a leftover 1969 model sitting on the dealership lot. The final price? $4,800. At the time it was simply a new Corvette. Today, it’s a rolling piece of family history.
And what makes this car special isn’t just the specs — it’s everything the car has witnessed over the decades.
A Corvette That Grew Up With the Family
This C3 Stingray has lived a full life.
It brought Wally’s first child home from the hospital.
It carried two of his daughters to their high school proms.
It served as a daily driver for the first 25 years, even surviving the harsh conditions of Fargo, North Dakota winters.
That’s something you rarely hear about with classic Corvettes today — a car that was truly driven, lived in, and loved.
Built to Drive, Not Just to Sit
Wally’s Corvette isn’t just a garage ornament.
Over the years it has competed in:
-
Autocross events
-
Time trials
-
Hill climbs
-
Road rallies
Like many Corvettes, it spent part of its life proving that the Stingray was more than just a pretty body — it was built to perform.
These days its competitive racing days are behind it, but the car is still winning People’s Choice awards at car shows, where enthusiasts appreciate its originality and incredible history.
About the Car
Wally’s Stingray is a beautifully classic 1969 Corvette Coupe equipped with:
-
350ci V8 producing 300 horsepower
-
4-speed manual transmission
-
Factory AM/FM radio (the most expensive option on the car)
The 1969 model year sits right in the sweet spot of the C3 “Shark” generation, when Corvette styling was bold, aggressive, and unmistakable. Long hood, sweeping fenders, and muscular stance made the late-60s Stingrays some of the most iconic American sports cars ever built.
And when a Corvette survives over half a century in the same family, it becomes far more than a collector car.
It becomes part of the story.
A Corvette That Isn’t Going Anywhere
Today, Wally’s Corvette is worth several times the original $4,800 purchase price. But selling it has never been the plan.
As Wally puts it:
“It’s a real keeper and not going anywhere as long as I’m vertical and still taking nourishment.”
That might be one of the most Corvette-owner statements we’ve ever heard.
