Fan Friday: Octane's 1972 White C3 Stingray Convertible
Some people spend years looking for the right Corvette. Octane found the right person first — and the Corvette followed naturally from there.
When he met his future wife, she was just 20 years old. On her bedroom wall: Corvette posters. He knew immediately she was the one. Thirty-five years of marriage later, the love for Corvettes hasn't faded a bit — and the 1972 white Stingray convertible sitting in their driveway is proof.
Corvettes weren't new to Octane's life either. He grew up surrounded by them — his father owned roughly eight Corvettes across the 1962 through 1968 model years, buying one and selling one, cycling through the late C1s and early C2s as they came and went. That's a childhood spent with some of the most iconic Corvette designs ever built. When it came time to own one himself, it was never really a question of if — only when and which. In 2008, the answer arrived: a 1972 Stingray convertible in white over black interior, with a 350 small block and a 4-speed manual. The combination is about as correct as a C3 gets.
The 1972 model year holds a special place in C3 history that's easy to overlook. It was the last year for chrome front bumpers — the clean, classic look visible on Octane's car in both photos — and the last year for the bright "egg crate" side grills and the removable rear window. Starting in 1973, urethane bumpers replaced the chrome, changing the look of the C3 permanently. Of the 27,004 Corvettes built in 1972, only 6,508 were convertibles — making every open-top '72 a relatively uncommon find today, and a particularly satisfying one to own. The car show setting in both photos says everything about how this one is being used: top down, out in the sun, doing exactly what a 1972 Stingray convertible was built to do. 🏎️
