Fan Friday: Gary Tolman's 2004 Le Mans Blue C5 Commemorative Edition Convertible

Gary Tolman didn't find his Corvette at a dealership or on a listing site. He found it at the Detroit Woodward Dream Cruise — the world's largest single-day automotive event, held annually along Woodward Avenue in metro Detroit, where more than a million people line the road each August to watch some 40,000 classic and collector cars cruise past. It's exactly the kind of place you'd stumble across the car you didn't know you were looking for.

The car in question: a 2004 Le Mans Commemorative Edition convertible with 14,000 miles on it. Gary bought it ten years ago. It now has 23,000. By any measure, that's a car being driven and enjoyed the way it should be — right in the city that helped build it.

The 2004 Commemorative Edition holds a meaningful place in C5 history. Chevrolet created it specifically to honor the Corvette racing program's back-to-back LMGTS class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2002 and 2003, and it was offered across all three C5 body styles — coupe, convertible, and Z06. The Le Mans Blue paint was developed to match the exact shade used on the C5-R factory race cars that competed and nearly won a third consecutive class victory in 2004. Only 4,874 non-Z06 Commemorative Edition C5s were built total across both coupe and convertible, making the package relatively exclusive for a mainstream Corvette option. Every Commemorative Edition — regardless of body style — received the Le Mans Blue paint and a Shale interior, with crossed flags embroidery on the seat headrests as a subtle nod to Corvette's racing heritage. Gary's shale interior is visible in the photo, looking as clean as the day it left Bowling Green. 

It's worth noting that 2004 was the final year of C5 production — Chevrolet was preparing to launch the C6 for 2005, and the Commemorative Edition served as both a racing tribute and a proper send-off for the generation. Le Mans Blue turned out to be the single most popular color across all 2004 Corvettes at 20% of total production — remarkable given that it was only available as part of the Commemorative package, meaning every Le Mans Blue 2004 you see on the road is a Commemorative Edition by definition. There was no other way to get it. Gary's convertible wears it beautifully, top down, parked in a Detroit-area neighborhood where this color earns its name every time it catches the sun.
