Fan Friday: Mike Ryan's 2007 Atomic Orange C6 Z06

Until the C8, Chevrolet never built a Corvette with the steering wheel on the right. Mike Ryan's 2007 Z06 has one anyway — and getting it there took a move to the other side of the world. This week's Fan Friday comes in from Australia.

The car started life in Vermont, where its first owner bought it new. When that owner relocated to Australia, the Z06 went too, and it was converted to right-hand drive at a cost of $50,000. Mike is the second owner, and apart from the conversion, the car is stock: Atomic Orange Metallic Tintcoat over the Z06's wide body, chrome split-spoke wheels with red calipers behind them, the vented hood, the raised rear spoiler and four exhaust tips out back. Under that hood sits the LS7, and Mike's verdict on the whole package is short and sweet: "Drives like a dream!"

It's a rarer car than it looks, even before the conversion. Atomic Orange was new for 2007, replacing Daytona Sunset Orange, and it was the least common of the Z06's regular-production colors that year — 673 built out of 8,159 Z06s. It also had a moment in the spotlight: the 2007 Indy 500 pace car was an Atomic Orange Corvette. Then there's the engine. The LS7 displaces 7.0 liters, or 427 cubic inches, the same as the legendary 1966–69 big-blocks, and makes 505 horsepower with titanium connecting rods and a dry-sump oiling system. Every one was assembled by hand, start to finish, by a single builder at GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan.
