May’s Corvette Club of the Month: The Allentown Area Corvette Club!

logo_plus_est_publisher

Founded in 1969 by a small group of individuals to promote, race and enjoy America’s only true sports car, the Allentown Area Corvette Club today has over 220 members of all ages from all over the Lehigh Valley and beyond. We are an active group, hosting two annual Corvette shows and participating in many Corvette-related activities such as car cruises/shows, autocrosses, and technical seminars at our sponsor, Faulkner Chevy-Cadillac .

Our Spring Corvette show is one of the first of the season, and is usually held the first Sunday in May at DeSales University in Center Valley, PA.

We’ve been both rained and SNOWED out, but we don’t give up on having a show during the Spring. Since 2011, we have held the event in the picturesque SteelStacks complex in Bethlehem, PA.

Social activities include miniature golf outings, a summer picnic and holiday party, organized trips, and group tours of regional businesses and attractions. We support the community through charitable contributions to various local organizations, based on the proceeds generated from our car shows.

An Interview With The Greater New Orleans Corvette Club

The History of the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club

Founded in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1988 with just 8 original members, the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club has grown to an astounding 416 members today.  Four of the founding members are still part of the club today. Club President and lifetime member, Tom Wooten, says, “We are indeed blessed with both a very active membership and a great Board of Directors.”

Annual Events Hosted By The GNOCC

The Greater New Orleans Corvette Club (GNOCC) hosts and attends a variety of events throughout the year.  According to Wooten, “The club appeals to many members based on our diverse offerings of activities—car shows, road trips, long distance travel trips, motor cross HPDE, etc.”

Their most recent event, the St. Valentine’s Cruise to Middendorf, hosted over 300 attendees. On March 26th you can catch the GNOCC members at the New Orleans Fairgrounds for a day of racing.  And in true Southern fashion, the GNOCC is hosting a Crawfish Boil on April 9th.

But perhaps the club’s hottest event of the year is the GNOCC ExtraVETTEganza. It draws an average of 250-300 Corvettes from over 8 states. The Corvette Only show takes place in October each year. This year the show celebrates it’s 26th anniversary and falls on Saturday, October 21st, with a pre-show party kicking off Friday night.

For a full list of GNOCC events, check out http://gnocc.com/club/events1.

Aside from Corvette events, the GNOCC actively supports local charities around the Greater New Orleans area.

Joe Biden Eyeing New Corvette

Joe Biden paid a special visit to the Motor City on January 10th, where the 2017 North American International Auto Show was in full swing. He was referred to as a “true American” while he made his way around the show floor, checking out all three major US automakers along the way. He chatted with executives and even hopped in a number of vehicles. But there was one car that really caught his eye.

Biden zeroed in on the new Corvette and enlisted the services of Corvette’s chief engineer, Tadge Juechter.

“I have his card now,” Juechter told the crowd as Biden finished his rounds. “He’s trying to figure out what to buy when he’s out of office.” Biden famously owns a 1967 Corvette but has only driven it three times in the last 7 years, due to the rules of the Secret Service which prevent both the President and the VP from operating a motor vehicle.

Juechter added, “He’s gonna get a Stingray—he’s imprinted on Stingray.”

Even with the Secret Service’s attempts to move Biden along, keeping journalists, photographers, and attendees at a safe distance, he kept returning to the Vettes.

“He pulled me out of the crowd three times as he was walking around,” Juechter said. “He wants to try the Z06. He’s a little worried that it might be over the top for him, but he’s definitely interested in trying.”

The Detroit Free Press reported that the Vice President has nothing but praise for the Motor City. He referred to Detroit as “the single shining example” of America’s economic resilience. He went on to say, “America owes [Detroit] for helping get back our soul.”

Corvette Factory Workers Bid A Special Farewell To 2016

The factory workers at the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant have been known to offer little surprise messages on vehicles as they make their way down the assembly line, creating a special relationship between themselves and future owners.

It’s been reported that service personnel at Kerbeck Corvette in Atlantic City, NJ has found one of these messages, this time a special farewell to 2016.

The black 2017 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible, the final car to make it’s way down the assembly line in 2016, was tagged underneath by one of the Bowling Green workers. The message reads, “Last One 2016”. Perhaps a little celebration for the workers before the plant shut down for their 2-week holiday break.

Dave Salvatore of Kerbeck Corvette shared the photo on Corvette Forum with the following statement:

I don’t know if this is something the factory does every year but obviously the guys wanted to celebrate their 2 week shutdown once this car was off of the line! By the way, it’s a black Grand Sport convertible if anyone is interested…

We love the idea of a personalized Corvette and it’s a unique way to bid farewell to 2016. The future owner will also have their own piece of Corvette trivia.

If anyone is interested in the Grand Sport, contact Kerbeck Corvette at 877-537-2325 or visit them online at www.kerbeck.com.

What’s Your Favorite 2017 Corvette Color?

With two brand new colors for the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette and two returning from the C4 era we’re curious what your favorite Corvette color is?

For 2017, we’re welcoming back the Admiral Blue and Black Rose Metallic. Admiral Blue originated in 1994 and ran through 1996. The color will be available for a short time late in the 2016 model run. Admiral blue is well known for being the color on all 1,000 1996 Grand Sports.

Black Rose Metallic debuted in 1992 and ran through 1994. There were just over 4,000 Corvettes sporting Black Rose Metallic during that run.

Watkins Glen Gray Metallic replaces Shark Gray for 2017. All 1,000 Collector Edition Grand Sports will be dressed in Watkins Glen Gray Metallic.

Sterling Blue is making its debut in the 2017 run.

So, what’s your favorite of the 4 colors for 2017? If we had to pick, we’d go with Black Rose Metallic with Watkins Glen Gray Metallic coming in a close second.

Leave a comment below and let us know your favorite color!

23rd Annual Corvette Funfest Kicks Off Thursday

This Thursday, Spetember 15th, marks the 23rd annual Corvette Funfest at Mid America Motorworks in Effingham, Illinois. The festival runs through Sunday, September 18th, and welcomes thousands of Corvettes each year. The event includes four days of Corvette expert seminars, product displays, fashion shows, Corvette Clubs, headlining entertainment, and more.

In 1994, Mike Yager and the team at Mid America Motorworks started up the Corvette show in appreciation of their customers. They wanted a way to share the Corvette hobby and Funfest was born. Over 1,200 people brought 350 assorted Corvettes to the Mid America Motorworks’ corporate campus that year to celebrate. By 2006, the event grew exponentially. Thousands of Corvettes filled every available space on the grounds. According to Mid America Motorworks, “This casual show has become the Largest Corvette Party in the World.” Each year they welcome enthusiasts from across the world.

Corvette Funfest has welcomed several Corvette celebrities over the years. Zora Arkus-Duntov, the first Chief Engineer of Corvette, has attended the event, along with Larry Shinoda, designer of the 1963 Corvette Split Window, Will Cooksey, Manager of the Bowling Green Corvette Plant, David McLellan, the Chief Engineer of the C4 Corvette, and Dave Hill, the Chief engineer of the C5 and C6 Corvettes.

Mike Yager states, “It has been especially gratifying for us to be able to host Funfest on our campus and be able to meet our customers face-to-face. Our customers actually named it ‘Funfest’ in many of the cards and letters we received after the first event. We continue to give away t-shirts, posters, and pins to each registrant attending Funfest – a tradition that began years ago. Once you attend Funfest, you usually make a point of attending every year.”

The annual event is held at the Mid America Motorworks campus at 2900 North 3rd Street in Effingham, Illinois. A full event schedule can be found at http://corvettefunfest.com/Schedule.aspx.

Corvette Goes Green

We are happy to report that Corvette has hopped on the green train. Over the weekend we reported on the potential of a new hybrid Corvette unveiling in 2019. Today we caught wind of another step in the eco-friendly direction. Empower Energies, a Maryland-based renewable power energy services platform, has announced the commissioning of an 850kW solar array at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant, home of the Chevy Corvette.

Corvette is the first of its kind to turn to solar energy. GM global manager of renewable energy, Rob Threlkeld, comments, “As the automotive industry leader of solar energy use in the United States, we want to demonstrate the benefits of solar energy use, like reducing our impact on the environment and providing value to our customers and investors.”

The solar array is now in full operation and is expected to produce over one million kilowatts of energy per year, or enough electricity to power 89 homes annually. Use of solar energy will avoid an estimated 814,000 pounds of carbon from entering the atmosphere each year.

Empower Energies’ CEO, Len Jorlin, states, “Corvette is such a quintessential brand. To be involved in providing affordable clean energy to build the Corvette has been a privilege and a delight for us…but not a surprise.” He adds, “GM’s renewable energy initiatives lead the automotive industry.”

We hope to see other automotive companies turn to renewable energy resources in the future. “Projects like this solar array at our Bowling Green plant help send a message that renewable energy is a sustainable and affordable choice for manufacturing,” says Threlkeld. Empower Energies stated that the new solar array is expected to generate 1,200,000kW of electricity in its first year of operation, enough to produce approximately 850 Corvettes.

The C8 Corvette: Hybrid Option and Mid-Engine Speculation

The media is at it again this week. There are so many rumors surrounding the C8 Corvette that we don’t know what to believe, but we like what we’re hearing.

Bob Lutz, former GM product czar, claims that the new generation will have a plug-in hybrid option. He predicts 10-15 mile plug-in electric capability that comes from a lithium-ion battery pack no larger than 5 kilowatt hours. There is also speculation that the plug-in ‘Vette will be able to achieve 50 mpg city.

A plug-in option only adds to what is already rumored to be the biggest change in Corvette history to date: the mid-engine layout. Earlier in the week, the Detroit News cited several company sources, stating that the mid-engine ‘Vette is indeed on its way in 2019. Codenamed “Emperor”, the new model has been dubbed “the worst-kept secret in town” according to GM product chief Mark Reuss. Bob Lutz also confirmed that the mid-engine layout was approved but then put on the back burner before the company’s bankruptcy in 2009. For more on the mid-engine layout, check out our post from a few weeks back.

With so many potential changes on the horizon, we have a feeling that the 8th generation will be the most radical yet.
